Today we’re looking at the formula for creating the most engaging video announcements! It’s quite simple really!
Church Announcements are one of the key components of our services. It’s the point in the service where we have everyone’s attention and you get to explain multiple ways that the congregation listening can get involved at the church. So if we want an active and alive church body that is involved at many events and volunteer opportunities at the church, shouldn’t we treat announcements as a hugely important part of our service? We need to be asking ourselves how we can communicate most effectively.
Of course, the first ingredient in our formula is the announcements themselves. But let me warn you! You don’t want to just plop in the announcements information and call it a day! You want to add something special to the mix. The WHY.
As sad as it may be, as humans we are all born asking the same question to everything. “What’s in it for me?” So how well can you answer that question in the minds of your congregation? Don’t just tell everyone about this youth group camp coming up. Don’t just plop in the details such as the date and location. Make sure you include why this matters.
In this example, instead of just spouting out information, be sure talk about the lives of the youth that have been changed at this camp. Talk to the parents and say “We all want our kids to have good Christian friends in their lives because as we know, you are who you hang out with. The kinds of relationships that are formed at this camp are relationships that last a lifetime and we’ve seen multiple youth surrender their life to Christ over this weekend. Here’s how to get connected…”
Isn’t that much more interesting and inspiring?
Welcome guests and explain what they should expect. When writing out this part of your announcements, dig a little deep and ask yourself, what are things that I assume people know? And Include those things in your welcome! Some examples may include the basic layout of the service or how long the service will end up being.
Attending a church for the first time can be uncomfortable, especially if you are an introvert. And as a guest the more information you have about what to expect the fewer nerves you’re going to feel about the experience. So use this as a chance to calm the nerves of your guests and increase the likelihood of them coming back!
THE CALL TO ACTION
This ingredient is different for every church, but it applies just the same. Firstly ask yourself “What are the next steps that we want our first-time visitors to take?” For many churches, this is in the form of a connect card. This could also look like a web address that you send everyone to fill out a form. For our church, it’s a tear off in the bulletin that we hand out every week.
An important part of your announcements because it serves a couple of purposes. The connect card gives you a chance to measure how many new visitors were at church this week. It also gives you a chance to connect deeper by offering a free gift bag for submitting the card.
But as we mentioned before, remember that they will be asking themselves, “What’s in it for me?” So be sure to explain why filling this out is in their best interest.
EXPLAIN THE VISION
This ingredient is very similar to the first one. It’s all about the why. But instead of saying “Why you should get involved in this event,” it’s more of an overarching “why”. Why is it that we gather together every week? What is our church trying to accomplish? In a concise way, explain what your churches mission is and how you strive to move people toward Jesus every week.
It’s the “why” that makes people want to rally behind something and take action.
It is important for the entire congregation to have a good understanding of what the church is trying to accomplish so that everyone can buy into and support the vision.
“We all want our kids to have good Christian friends in their lives because as we know, you are who you hang out with. The kinds of relationships that are formed at this camp are relationships that last a lifetime and we’ve seen multiple youth surrender their life to Christ over this weekend. Here’s how to get connected…
If this is your first time here at My Church I just want to say Welcome, and that we are so glad to have you here with us this week. Very shortly will continue to sing a few more songs and hear a message from our pastor. In all, you should expect to be here for about an hour.
Here at My Church, our focus is on growing our own relationship with Jesus while fostering a community that spreads the light of God in this world. Our mission is to know Christ and make Him known.
We want to get to know you better and have you join this awesome community. If you’re looking to get connected here, we invite you to fill out the connect card located in your bulletin and drop it off at the information desk. We have a special gift bag for you today for joining us this weekend. Again we thank you for coming and hope you enjoy the service.”
So while you might have every ingredient you need to get started writing out your announcements, that’s not the only ingredient you are going to need! You’re gonna need some B-Roll.
What is B-Roll? Why is it important? And how do I get it for my video announcements? Allow me to answer all of your questions by clicking this video right here. Not sure how you’re gonna memorize the script for your announcements? Well, you don’t have to! Let me show you how to put together a $4 teleprompter that you can use in your videos, some people have told me that this is a very clever budget saver!
